今日はモスクについてお話しします。モスクって行ったことありますか？
Today I am going to talk about mosques. Have you ever been to a mosque?
私はイスラムに興味があった時も、モスクに足を踏み入れたことはなかったですね。
なんか関係者以外立ち入り禁止みたいな雰囲気があって。
Even when I was interested in Islam, I never set foot in a mosque.
There was an atmosphere that was off-limits only to tanyone other than those involved.
モスクに行く人って男性が圧倒的に多いんですね。例えば金曜日の集団礼拝はモスクでやることが強く強く推奨されているので、みんな時間を作ってモスクに行きます。だけど女性にはそうした義務がないので、比率でいうと圧倒的に男性が多いんです。
The majority of people who go to mosques are men. For example, it is strongly recommended to go to the mosque on Fridays for collective prayer, so everyone makes time to go there. But women are not obliged to do so, so the ratio is overwhelmingly male.
だからその辺りに通りかかって興味があってチラチラ見ていても、男性だけで、とても入る勇気はなくて、また「やっぱりイスラムは男性優位ね」とか思いながら通り過ぎていました。そういう訳じゃなかったんですけどね。
So when I was passing by and I was interested in the mosque, I didn't have the courage to go in because there were only men there, so I just walked on by thinking that Islam is male-dominated. It is not so actually.
で実際はどうなのか。So how is it actually?
日本にもモスクが増えてきて、2種類あるんですね、モスクって言われるものとムサッラー。その条件とか基準とかが決まっていて、主にその規模ですね。大きさ的にもやっている内容的にもその規模によって名称が違います。
Mosques are increasing in Japan, and there are two types, the one called mosque and musallahs. There are certain conditions and standards, mainly the scale. The name differs depending on the scale, both in terms of size and activity.
ムサッラーと呼ばれるところは、日本全国に増えてきているので、皆さんの身近にもあると思います。本当にその周辺に住んでいるイスラム教徒が集まって、主に礼拝を集団でする必要性のためにアパートの一室とかマンションの一室とかで始めたっていうケースが多いです。あと留学生が多いエリアとか。
The number of Musallahs is increasing all over the country, so I am sure you can find one near you. In many cases, Muslims who live in the vicinity have gathered and started to pray together in a room of a flat or a condominium, mainly because they need to pray congregation. Then it turned into Musallah. That is the case. Also in areas where there are many international students.
余談ですが、東京大学。東京大学に礼拝施設っていうのが、なくってですね。一応多分留学生達が苦心して作ったであろうものが、本当に古い木の校舎の階段の踊り場にあるんです。いや～東大、留学生いっぱいいるだろうから礼拝施設くらい作ってくれればいいのにと思ってしまいますけどね。空室でいいんだから。
As an aside, the University of Tokyo. The University of Tokyo doesn't have a prayer room. What the international students probably struggled to make is at the landing of the stairs in a really old wooden school building. There are many international students at the University of Tokyo, so why don't they at least build a place of worship? Just an empty room is enough.

東大に行った時、確か土曜日か日曜日、職員さんに「すみません、ないんです。あるといいんですけどねえ。ないのかなあ」と言われたことがあったのですが、ちゃんとあると言うことが判明しました。よかったよかった。そりゃそうだわな。その方が知らなかったのですね。When I went to the university of Tokyo, it was Saturday or Sunday, when I asked the staff he said "I am sorry, we don't have one. I hope there is. Should be." Later someone told me actually there is one, good one. It's a great new. Yes of course they should have one. Maybe the staff didn't know it.
このようにいろいろなケースがありまして、なので行かれる時は、それがモスクであれ何であれ、やってるかどうかっていう確認はされた方がいいと思います。基本的に行きたいと言えばウエルカムされるはずですので。そうなんです、それは問題ないんですけれども、突然行ってやっていないっていうことは往々にしてあるんです。教会とかお寺とかどうなんでしょうね。やってないっていうことはないような気がするんだけど。
There are various cases like this, so when you go there, whether it's a mosque or not, I think you should check whether it's open or not. Basically, if you say you want to visit, you will be welcomed. Yes, that's not a problem, but it's often the case you would find the door is closed when you arrived. I wonder how about churches and temples. I don't think there is any such thing.
本当にその鍵を持ってる人が金曜日にだけ開けるとか、土曜日の夜の勉強の時だけ開けるとかっていうことがあるので、これは大事なポイントです。
いくところの目星を付けたら、なんとか連絡を取ってアポを取った方がいいでしょうね。
This is an important point because sometimes the person who has the key only opens the door on Fridays, or only on Saturday night when they are studying.
