Are the Japanese really non-religious? What I want foreign Muslims to know.

The other day I watched a TV program on NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation)

It was interesting.

They were showing Tokyo, which focused on the Japanese beliefs from the end of the year to the beginning of the year.

Japanese people often say that they don't have any religion, or that they don't believe in anything, or that their family has this religion, but I don't believe in anything in particular.

The foreigners who hear it believe it as the word says.

Many of my muslim friends also believe that Japanese people are non-religious.

Also, they often say, "Japanese people are smart, logical and rational people in a very prosperous and developed country, but I don't know why they pray for something like a doll. I can't believe they think the idols will move and do something for them."

You don't understand, I think with a sigh.

The program focuses on a small temple in a shopping street where there is a small statue of Buddha, maybe a Jizo.

The neighbours polish it every morning from 3.30am. People from the neighbourhood gather there from around 6 o'clock in the morning to pay their respects with money. They sit on the benches there and start to communicate with each other.

In the middle of Tokyo, in the middle of the city.

There is faith, isn't it?

Perhaps the Buddha is different from the religion or sect of each person's family.  But it doesn't matter, does it?   They don't care about it.

Their deeds are pure, beautiful, very sincere and earnest.

There is a shrine in my neighbourhood.  When people pass the shrine, I see many people who stop and give a bow to it from the front street.

In Japan, many people are visiting shrines even this New Year.

This is what I would like foreign Muslims to understand.
